Calloway County's Lady Lakers play Marshall County in the first round of the Fourth District Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at 6:00 pm CST in Calloway's Jeffrey Gymnasium.
Calloway comes into the game with a 21-7 record while Marshall is 20-7. The Cantrall Ratings make Marshall a seven point favorite.
The teams have played twice this season.
In the first meeting Calloway won a hard fought game on its home court, 46-45, as Charlee Settle scored 17 points. Seven of Settle's 17 came on free throws. The Lady Lakers also got 13 points from Elle Carson and 12 from Keeli Puckett.
Three Marshall players reached double figures as Cayson Conner scored 14 points, Halle Langhi had 12 and Lorin Powell had 10.
In the second game Calloway led 11-10 after the first quarter, and was within four at halftime, trailing 20-16. But Marshall pulled away in the second half for a 46-32 victory.
Charlee Settle had 20 points with six of those coming on free throws. But, no one else had more than four points. The Lady Lakers made just 11 of 42 shots, and attempted just nine free throws to Marshal's 15.
Lorin Powell led Marshall with 12 points while Layne Pea had 11.
I don't think Marshall has quite the edge that the Cantrall Ratings seem to suggest. But, for Calloway to win they will have to be more aggressive attacking the basket, so that they can get to free throw line.
And Charlee Settle needs one, or two of her teammmates to help carry the scoring load. If she's the only one to reach double figures, this will not end well for Calloway. The good news is that Puckett, Carson, and Adison Hicks are more than capable of doing that.
Look for this one to go to the wire.
