The Calloway County Lakers play Marshall County in the first round of the Fourth District Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm CST in Calloway's Jeffrey Gymnasium.
Calloway comes into the game with an 11-17 record while Marshall County is 12-17. The Cantrall Ratings make Marshall a six point favorite.
The teams have played twice this season with Marshall winning both games.
Marshall jumped out to an early lead in the first game and steadily pulled away to defeat the Lakers 54-43. Kade Mize led Calloway with 18 points. Chandler Steele had 12 and Cade Butler had 10. Marshall got 21 points from Jonathan Stokes and 11 from Bryce Flatt.
The Lakers made just 7-of-13 free throws and just 2-of-7 3-pointers. And, Marshall had eight steals to just three for Calloway.
Marshall held a 15 point lead after three quarters in the second game. But the Lakers outscored them 23-14 in the fourth quarter as Marshall prevailed 56-50.
Butler led the way for Calloway with 15 points and Mize had 13. Four Marshals reached double figures, led by Jay Nimmo with 15. The Lakers made 16-of-17 free throws. They also did a better job of taking care of the ball, as Marshall only had four steals. They still struggled from the 3-point line, though, making just 4-of-13.
For Calloway to win they will have to knock down open looks from behind the arc and limit live ball turnovers. If they do that, they might just pull off the upset. You can catch all the action on 89.7 FM. Click here to listen on your computer.
