Racers Break Into AP Top-25
For the first time since March 2015, the Racers are among the Top-25 national rankings in the Associated Press poll. The Racers debuted No. 23 in the Associated Press Top-25 and No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Racers' game Thursday at TSU is their first as a ranked team since the championship game of the OVC Tournament in 2015, a game that Belmont won at the buzzer to snap MSU's OVC record 25-game winning streak. The last time MSU met TSU as a ranked team happened in MSU's famous 2011-12 season when they were the nation's final undefeated team at 23-0 when TSU upset the Racers at the CFSB Center, but the Racers later beat the Tigers in the OVC Tournament championship game in 2012.
MSU moved up to No. 2 behind only Gonzaga in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 and they were No. 27 by KenPom.com and No. 29 in the NCAA Net Rankings.
Great Performance = Winning
The Racers begin the week in a good spot as one of only five teams that rank in the top-25 in both offensive and defensive efficiency according to KenPom.com. The Racers (3rd offense/21st defense) are in a group that includes Gonzaga(2nd/6th), Houston (4th/2nd), Kentucky (7th/14th) and Arizona (10th/5th). Entering the week, the Racers lead the OVC in nine stat categories and are second in six others. MSU is first in the league in scoring margin, rebound margin, offensive rebounds per game, 3-point defense, made 3-point baskets, field goal defense, scoring defense, turnover margin and turnovers forced.
Given the success the team has enjoyed and the personal performances over the last four seasons, it's obvious that Tevin Brown and KJ Williams will someday be honored inductees for the Murray State Hall of Fame. Already members of the MSU 1000-Point Club, they have earned a spot in more exclusive clubs in MSU history. Brown has become the third player at MSU to score 1,500 points, grab 500 rebounds and give out 350 assists. The other two are Isaac Spencer and Glen Green. Williams is 66 points from joining Spencer and Popeye Jones as the only MSU players to score 1,500 points and grab 800 rebounds.
